When
all else fails,
you
have your heart.
I’m
not talking about
the
one that princesses
sing
about that’s
shaped
like a valentine.
I’m
talking about the
organ,
the muscle
that’s
the size
of
your fist that beats one hundred
thousand
times
every
single day
to
keep you alive.
It
releases your blood,
your
precious lifeline,
through
the almighty
aorta,
and it takes
it
back through the
Vena
Cava,
veins
that are
larger
and thicker
than
those fragile
ones
on your wrist.
You
beat blue and red,
and
that little ticker in
your
chest should be
reason
enough to
not
give up.
Whatever
is thrown at you,
Your
anatomic heart
is
stronger than all of it.
Because
one day,
all
of those troubles and
demons
will be gone,
but
your heart will
still
be thumping.
I very much enjoyed this poem! When we think of the heart, I feel that we often have a vision in mid of the typical Valentine heart, but there isn't much consideration for the one that is beating inside of you, keeping you alive. I especially liked the stanza:
ReplyDeleteYou beat blue and red,
and that little ticker in
your chest should be
reason enough to
not give up.
I agree with you, Megan. This poem takes an unsentimental look at a rugged little organ.
